Result!

How fantastically bloody marvelous am I then eh?

After weeks of collating my data I was finally able to shove it all through SPSS (statistical analysis software) and after pouring over the output  (tables and graphs filled with zillions of numbers) I was chuffed to see that basically I am fab.

Out of the 11 different measures from the voice analysis 8 were significant, 2 were approaching significance and only 1 said nothing happening. Ya-hooooooooo.

So basically this means that…well…can’t tell you actually because before I hand in my dissertation I have to feed it through some software that will match what I have written against what is already on the internet. It’s to make sure that I haven’t copied anything. I’m allowed a certain % because obviously there are only so many words in the English language and so many combinations, particularly within a specialist area, but I’m not prepared to risk this % going up and someone investigating as to why and where. That would be an interesting discussion in front of the plagiarism committee wouldn’t it?
I will tell you in May though.  Maybe June.  It’s worth waiting for. It’s an original finding.

Meanwhile I am tapping away at the rest my dissertation.

*grin*

  1. Well done for wrapping it up Anna, took your time tho…

‘ I hand in my dissertation I have to feed it through some software that will match what I have written against what is already on the internet’

WOW! had to idea such thing existed, how effective is it?

  2. Haha, congratulations!!
And where can I get the software you talked about?? Sounds bloody marvelous!! ;)

    xxx

  3. Serena - hopefully not too effective *whistles*

    Pierced - SPSS or turnitin?

  4. Congrats!!!! Your results sound extremely promising :)

S oftware P revents S illy S hits like me from copying. But that’s so cool that you have the software. Does it highlight high risk areas? I’d love to get my hands on that software. ha ha

Raise your hand if you like to paraphrase.

    *raises her hand

Our university used plagiarism software (although I think they were bluffing lol) to scan and compare students’ papers with previous written works to prevent copying (i.e., cutting and pasting phrases, etc).

I don’t copy other people’s papers; it’s their work and hard efforts, but like you said there are only so many word combinations in our language. Sheesh lol

    Congrats, again.

  5. hey Ruby

SPSS is the statistical analysis program.

turnitin.com is the software to help stop plagurism. Take a look at their website, not only does it give a % but it also produces a report telling your tutor where!

I don’t think your university is bluffing Ruby ;)

  6. Not so lomg ago, I had a job with a firm whose business is to spot plagiarism, or simply accidental close resemblance, in the field of trade marks. This is the first I’ve heard of Tumitin: could it have helped our work, I wonder - or, alternatively, made it superfluous?

  7. Just remember not to burn the candle at both ends to much now! Congratulations girl!! :-)

  8. :D lol I know they’re not bluffing, but I like to think some of the professors used scare tactics for a couple of students with it ha ha

and wow…I had a peek at the site, pretty serious schtuff there!

Congrats, again, though…this is exciting. I’m really eager to hearing more about it this summer (May or June, right?).
